Building my new release server

Over the weekend I embarked upon building a new server for performing the Apache Karaf release candidates I build. I thought I'd share some specs, setup, and photos of the completed project.

The Gear:

• Dell PowerEdge T110 II Chasis.
• Intel Xeon E3-1240 v3 (4 Core, 8 Threads @ 3.4 Ghz)
• 16 GB ECC Ram (2 * 8GB @1600 Mhz DDR3)
• Intel Enterprise SSD 120 GB for Operating System.
• Intel Enterprise SSD 240 GB for tools, m2 repo, and build.
• Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS

Configuring The System:

The Apache Karaf Release Guide provides the blueprint for this build, providing the community with a reproducible set of steps to help us avoid relying on a 'magic build' machine. The guide outlined the various tools, their versions, and configurations required to produce a build candidate.

No more spinning disks for my build machine :)

System Layout:

The 120GB disk was chosen as the primary boot disk, hosting Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and a swap partition (/dev/sda). The 240GB disk was formatted as a single partition using an ext3 filesystem (/dev/sdb).

I prefer to keep my Operating System and 'task' drives separate on a server.

Build Drive Organization:  

The build drive hosts three directories:

• tools - All build tools.
• repo - local m2 repository.
• source - SVN and Git repos.

The tools directory contains various versions of JDKs, Ant, Maven, PrinceXML, and my environment scripts.

Apache Karaf 2.3.8 and 2.4.0 Released!

The Apache Karaf team are pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.3.8 and 2.4.0!

Apache Karaf 2.3.8 is an update patch for Apache Karaf 2.3.7, containing several bug fixes, and dependency updates. We have introduced support of !$ to recall the last command argument, and improved the command description for osgi:shutdown. It is recommended that you review our release notes before updating your deployments.

Apache Karaf 2.4.0 release represents a new branch of Apache Karaf development. It includes the latest Aries and Pax libraries, Apache Pom 14, add support for role-based JMX authorization, includes heap dumps when we create debugging data from create dump command, blueprint-web feature, support for JAAS groups, and includes Pax CDI feature. There are several hundred items currently in this RC's release notes, so you'll want to spend some time discovering all the hidden gems.

As always, I'd like to thank the community for coming together to help make the Karaf release process one of the best in all of open source software.

Up coming release candidates - Apache Karaf 2.3.8, 2.4.0, and 3.0.2!

Apache Karaf 2.3.8:

This patch update will contain an essential update to Felix FileInstall, we hope to have this patch available for vote ASAP.

Apache Karaf 2.4.0:

This release candidate represents a new branch of Apache Karaf development. It shall include the latest Aries and Pax libraries, Apache Pom 13, add support for role-based JMX authorization, includes heap dumps when we create debugging data from create dump command, blueprint-web feature, support for JAAS groups, and includes Pax CDI feature. There are several hundred items currently in this RC's release notes, so you'll want to spend some time discovering all the hidden gems.

Apache Karaf 3.0.2:

Our second patch update to the 3.0 line, this release candidate will contain vital bug fixes, and essential library updates.

Apache Karaf 2.3.6 Released!

The Apache Karaf team are pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.3.6!

This is an update patch for Apache Karaf 2.3.5, containing many bug fixes, dependency updates, and improvements. New feature highlights include: Automatically create data sources from configuration files, add backing engine serivce for PublickeyLoginModule, add a flag to bin/client so that it can read private key from a specified location, and Provide shell:env command.

It is recommended that you review our release notes before updating your deployments.

The Karaf 2.3.6 RC process was enjoyed with Placido Chianti 2011.

As always, I'd like to thank the community for coming together to help make the Karaf release process one of the best in all of open source software.


OpenDaylight Update:

The OpenDaylight port to Apache Karaf has been proceeding steadily towards a stable ecosystem wide build. Next week's Techicial Work Stream conference call will include an End-To-End Hands-on walk-through of ODL Karaf Features. I've copied in below the TWS meeting objectives as outlined by Madhu Venugopal:

"Due to multiple queries from various projects, we are organizing an end-to-end hands on walk-through on Karaf. This will cover all the way from

1. Writing the Karaf feature file on any project
2. Building the .kar
3. Loading the Karaf Container
4. Installing the built feature and Validation.

Time permitting, we will also be covering the Docker based Integration Testing & Sonar coverage. Mathieu Lemay & myself will be leading these topics.
We request at-least 1 representative from each of the projects participating in Helium to attend this session."

I strongly recommend all OpenDaylight developers and users attend this meeting, also any interested Apache Karaf community members as this is a great opportunity to see Karaf's many benefits being realized in a large scale project. Please see the meeting page for conference call details.

Up coming Apache Karaf releases, OpenDaylight update, and my acceptance into the ASF.

We have two release candidates in progress: Apache Karaf 2.3.6 and 3.0.2.

Our first target is the Karaf 2.3.x line. 

Highlights in this RC include; Better management of RMI/JMX ports for pax-exam integration tests, more robust JDBC against broken data sources,  several improvements to JAAS, among many other refinements and bug fixes.

Wine pairing for this RC is Placido Chianti 2011

Our second release focus is the Karaf 3.0.x line.

Highlights in this RC include; RBAC recognize group configuration when use Publickey to login, more robust JDBC against broken data sources, add support for role based JMX authorization, Mbean Server RBAC guard should support wildcard role, among many other refinements and bug fixes.

Wine pairing for this RC will be Gabbiano Chianti 2010.

We can't wait to get these release candidates out to the community for validation and voting. Please keep an eye on our dev list for when the votes go live.

Any updates on OpenDaylight on Apache Karaf?

Lots of initial features sets have been defined, and commands adapted to work in their new environment. It's still a work in progress, but coming along nicely :)

On a personal note, I've recently accepted an invitation to become a member of the Apache Software Foundation. I can not express how honoured I am to be given the opportunity to participate with the Apache Community on this level. Apache Karaf 2.3.5 and 3.0.1 Released!

The Apache Karaf team are pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.3.5 and 3.0.1!

These releases provide system update patches to the 2.3.x and 3.0.x lines. It is recommended that you review our release notes before updating your deployments.

This release process has been something more special, as we produced two release candidates for review at the same time - hence double decanter day.

The Karaf 3.0.1 RC process was enjoyed with Gabbiano Chianti 2011, while the Karaf 2.3.5 RC was enjoyed over a bottle of Fetzer Vally Oaks Zinfandel 2010.

Best release process ever.

Apache Karaf 2.3.5 and 3.0.1 Release Candidates are both up for vote!

I'll apologize that I had to switch over the Extravaganza Trapiche 2013 to a Gabbiano Chianti 2011 (Karaf 3.0.1). The former bottle accidentally made it into the general consumption collection.

The Karaf 2.3.5 RC is being enjoyed with a bottle of Fetzer Vally Oaks Zinfandel 2010.

Please take some time to down load the RC kits, or build from tags in git. The more testing the better for the community. In the mean while I'm going to setup two decanters and enjoy the breathing process twice over :)

Preparing for Apache Karaf 2.4.0, and 3.0.1

We have two Apache Karaf releases currently on our radar - Apache Karaf 2.4.0 and 3.0.1.

Apache Karaf 2.4.0:

Our next iteration of the 2.x line will introduce: The latest Aries and Pax libraries, Apache Pom 13, add support for role-based JMX authorization, includes heap dumps when we create debugging data from create dump command, blueprint-web feature, support for JAAS groups, and includes Pax CDI feature. Of course there are many other new additions, which you'll have to read about in the release notes.

To prepare I've selected a bottle of Barbera D'asti Bersano 2008 to decant while listening to Arcade Fire's album Reflektor.

Apache Karaf 3.0.1:

This will be our first patch release of the 3.0.x line after our long awaited 3.0.0 GA.

Highlights include updates to Felix, Pax, and Aries libraries, inclusion of Pac CDI, added support for displaying Gogo commands in Karaf console, and an updated OpenJPA feature. Many more improvements and bug fixes are provide, and it is highly recommended that you consult the release notes.

To prepare for this patch, I've selected a bottle of Extravaganza Trapiche 2013 to decant while listening to Pearl Jam's album Lightening Bolt.

Release Process:

We've recently made the switch to Git from Subversion, and have successfully produced our first few major and minor releases under the new system. For those of you whom are interested in some of the changes that occurred behind the scenes, please visit our release guide.

Nursing a cold, better write a blog update.

I've been relatively quiet posting to my blog the last few months, a lot of that has been due to travel, work, and few background projects I've puttering away on. Given I'm home nursing a cold I thought I'd update you all on a couple of things I've been working on:

Automated Apache Karaf Builds:

Suse Enterprise Linux,  Ubuntu, and Windows 7 Pro Jenkins Nodes in Action

To help make performing Apache Karaf releases easier I've invested in operating a small Jenkins testing infrastructure. Each node is built on a Dell 110ii server, with Xeon processor and SSD disk. Karaf, along with other projects I'm tracking, are built nightly on various platforms such that I can quick gauge their health status. When a release become immanent I log into the master Jenkins node and quickly issue a build on the platforms before kicking off the release candidate build. This saves me a lot of time as I can often catch platform specific build bugs before having the community begin a RC vote. These builds augment the reports generated by https://builds.apache.org - providing me with more platform coverage, thereby increasing our RC confidence.

Learning Apache Karaf:

As posted here before, my Fall was taken up in writing and finalizing Packt's Learning Apache Karaf.  From feed back I've received many have found it a useful resource for introducing their teams to Apache Karaf, others have commented that they wished we could have dived deeper into development on the platform - to remedy this request a new project was undertaken...

Apache Karaf Cookbook:

Our last Karaf book introduced users and administers to the basics of Apache Karaf. While providing a great overview many people asked for more in depth examples of using Karaf to accomplish everyday tasks. To this end we (Johan, Heath, Achim, and I) have under took a new project to build a recipe book of Karaf projects for Packt Publishing. The work has been underway for the last two months, and we expect it to continue through to the summer season. Topics such as making Karaf production ready, using Apache Camel, ActiveMQ, and CXF in Karaf are covered and so many more! We're really excited to be working on this project and hope that it satisfies our readers thirst for more demos and in-depth explanations.

Apache Karaf 2.3.2 Released!

The Apache Karaf team is pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.3.2.

In this patch update to the 2.3.x line contains multiple bug fixes, improvements, and dependency updates including; restored IBM Java compatibility, DirectoryWatcher for deploy folder now waits for framework start level to reach 60, BundleWatcher now waits for refresh to be finished before updating another bundle, CXF DOSGI feature now included in Karaf repos config, HTTP feature now installs a default web config file, and dependency updates to Spring 3.2.3.RELEASE, Pax Web 1.1.14, Aries Transaction Blueprint 1.0.1, and Pax Url 1.3.6.

As discussed in my prior Apache Karaf 2.3.2 preparation post, I enjoyed listening to Tegan and Sara albums throughout the release process and was delighted to try the Vina Maipo Gran Devocion Cabernet Sauvignon / Syrah 2010. I think the music and wine pairings are really working well for these releases, that being said if anyone has suggestions for future music or wine selections please post them below :)

Apache Karaf 3.0.0.RC2 is next in line as a release candidate - this kit will contain our first OSGi Rev 5 compatibility.

Preparing for Apache Karaf 2.3.2

The second patch release of the Apache Karaf 2.3.x branch is in flight towards an immanent RC, as such I'm preparing for the release management role.

To prepare I've selected a bottle of Vina Maipo Gran Devocion Cabernet Sauvignon / Syrah 2010 to decant while listening to some Tegan and Sara albums.

Current high lights of this patch include a collection of bug fixes, a new word count command and updates to Spring 3.2.2.Release, Pax Web 1.1.4, and Pax URL 1.3.6. A complete change log will be created for the Release Candidate once the community is ready to put it to vote.

The wine will of course only be sampled after being gave proper time to breath in its container, after the first release candidate has be up loaded for voting (see our release guide for more details on our process).

Unfortunately I can't share the wine with you, but I can share a few links to some videos. I'm looking forward to starting the 2.3.2 release process soon.

Apache Karaf 2.2.10 Released!

The Apache Karaf team is pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.2.10.

This release of Apache Karaf is based off of the 2.2.x series branch, representing an update to Apache Karaf 2.2.9. It contains bug fixes identified in the prior release, and introduces improvements including; Making pom.xml eclipse 3.7 m2e friendly, updating Spring to 2.5.6.SEC03, improved terminal behavior when sshing from windows to unix, and improved lock logic to wait while start level change occurs. Several dependencies were also updated, bringing Felix Webconsole to 4.0.0, pax-logging to 1.6.10, pax-web to 1.0.12, and the Apache pom to version 12.

To help make the transition from previous Apache Karaf 2.2.x releases to 2.2.10 easier we've put together a table of changed dependencies which you can view here. For more information please see the release notes.

As discussed in my prior Apache Karaf 2.2.10 preparation post, I enjoyed listening to Alexisonfire albums throughout the release process and was delighted to try the Robert Skalli Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. I think the music and wine pairings are really working well for these releases, that being said if anyone has suggestions for future music or wine selections please post them below :)

Now that this patch release is out, I can't wait for the up coming 2.3.1 and 3.0.0.RC1 kits - both branches are rapidly coming close to being ready! Rest assured however that Karaf 2.2.11 is also in the works.

Preparing for Apache Karaf 2.3.1

The first patch release of the Apache Karaf 2.3.x branch will be soon entering the planning phase (no immediate need patch, 2.3.0 is performing wonderfully!), as such I'm preparing for the release management role.

To prepare I've selected a bottle of Marques de Casa Concha 2010 Pinot Noir to decant while listening to some Death From Above 1979 albums.

Current high lights of this patch include a multitude of updates to dependencies, such as updating to OSG 4.3.1, Apache pom 11, Spring 3.1, Pax-web 1.1.5, and Servicemix Specs 2.2. A complete change log will be created for the Release Candidate once the community is ready to put it to vote.

The wine will of course only be sampled after being gave proper time to breath in its container, after the first release candidate has be up loaded for voting (see our release guide for more details on our process).

Unfortunately I can't share the wine with you, but I can share a few links to some DFA 1979 videos. I'm looking forward to starting the 2.3.1 release process soon.

Apache Karaf 2.3.0 Released!

The Apache Karaf team is pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.3.0.


This release of Apache Karaf sets the stage for the 3.0.x line, introducing OSGi rev 4.3 support, new commands, features, improvements, and a multitude of dependency updates. At Karaf's core you'll find Equinox 3.8.0.v20120529-1548 and Apache Felix framework 4.0.3. New additions such as Karaf-pax-exam, commands back ported from Karaf 3.x, and command aliases to help make migrating between 2.3.x and 3.x easier, and a multitude of supporting libraries updates.

All of the updates seen in this kit would have broke compatibility if applied to the Karaf 2.2.x line, hence this new branch (command syntax remains the same however, so its part of the 2.x family - see Karaf 3.x for major changes).

As discussed in my prior Apache Karaf 2.3.0 preparation post, I enjoyed listening to Esthero albums throughout the release process and was delighted to try the La Cour Pavillon Bordeaux Merlot - Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. I think the music and wine pairings are really working well for these releases, that being said if anyone has suggestions for future music or wine selections please post them below :)

Now that this 'dot oh' release is out, I can't wait for the up coming 3.0.0.RC1! Rest assured that patches for 2.2.x and 2.3.x will continue (and in the later case begin) on a regular basis.

Preparing for Apache Karaf 2.2.10

The tenth maintenance release of the Apache Karaf 2.2.x branch will be soon entering the planning phase, as such I'm preparing for the release management role.

To prepare I've selected a bottle of Robert Skalli Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 to decant while listening to some Alexisonfire albums.

Current high lights of this patch include better Windows client support, improved SSH support on certain *nix systems, and an improvement to the features install sequence (install, install, install... start, start, start). Of course there will also be dependency updates such as moving to pax-logging 1.6.10, Spring 2.5.6.SEC03, and pax-web 1.0.12. A complete change log will be created for the Release Candidate once the community is ready to put it to vote.

The wine will of course only be sampled after being gave proper time to breath in its container, after the first release candidate has be up loaded for voting (see our release guide for more details on our process).

Apache Karaf 2.2.9 Released!

The Apache Karaf team is pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.2.9.

This release of Apache Karaf is based off of the 2.2.x series branch, representing an update to Apache Karaf 2.2.8. It contains bug fixes identified in the prior release, and introduces improvements including; An update to fix a NullPointerException when using JDK 6 update 33 or JDK 7 update5, a new JDBC lock implementation for Postgres, a fix for using version with the wrap protocol, and renaming command-watch to watch. Several dependences were also updated, bringing Felix Framework to 3.2.2, pax-logging to 1.6.9, slf4j to 1.6.6, xbean to 3.11.1, aries proxy to 0.3.1, and a multitude of updates to maven plugins.

The wine will of course only be sampled after being gave proper time to breath in its container, after the first release candidate has be up loaded for voting (see our release guide for more details on our process).

Anatomy of an Apache vulnerability report, and Secure Release Management

Last year I volunteered with the local St John's Security BSides conference by providing blog coverage, and other help behind the scenes. This year I've submitted a talk covering the anatomy of an Apache vulnerability report and secure release management. UPDATE: My talk has been accepted!

If you're not familiar with the BSides conference series, here is a quote from their website: "Security BSides is a community-driven framework for building events for and by information security community members. The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation beyond the traditional confines of space and time. It creates opportunities for individuals to both present and participate in an intimate atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It is where conversations for the next-big-thing are happening."

In my talk we'll discuss the procedure for reporting a security vulnerability to an Apache project, and what you as a reporter should expect to see happen as the project community validates the issue, and proceeds towards a resolution. After we have discussed the process we'll take a look at the content of a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) report.

We'll then switch gears to talk about how users can validate that their Apache project downloads are in fact legitimate. This is one of the more important safety practices that I tend to show users - all Apache projects provide safety measures on their releases, here I'll show the audience how they too can verify that they have release artifacts from the project community.

Apache Karaf 2.2.8 Released!

The Apache Karaf team is pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.2.8.


This release of Apache Karaf is based off of the 2.2.x series branch, representing an update to Apache Karaf 2.2.7. It contains bug fixes identified in the prior release, and introduces improvements including; A command that can not be loaded no longer breaks the whole completion, removing a KAR now uninstalls the shipped features, and SSH keystore is now compatible with IBM JDK. Several dependences were also updated, bringing ServiceMix Specs to version 2.0, pax-logging to 1.6.7, Jansi to 1.9, JLine to 2.7, Felix Utils to 1.2.0, Felix FileInstall to 3.2.4, and sshd to 0.7.0.

As discussed in my prior Apache Karaf 2.2.8 preparation post, I enjoyed listening to Metric albums throughout the release process and was delighted to try the Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir 2010 -- this time I had to sample the wine a little late as I was on the road (again) for the release process ;)

It was noted during the release cycle of this patch that the community needs to take a tighter stand on functional changes in the code base - sometimes bug fixes may break functionality other users have come to depend on. To help mitigate this issue we're looking at making branching a more common occurrence in the future. Once Karaf 2.3.x is out, expect to see a 2.4.x branch come into being to collect any new features or functional changes.

Apache Karaf 2.2.7 Released!

The Apache Karaf team is pleased to announce the availability of Apache Karaf 2.2.7.

This release of Apache Karaf is considered a high priority update for users of Apache Karaf 2.2.6. An issue in which configuration updates were not being persisted to storage was detected, an update to FileInstall version 3.2.2 was made necessary. In addition to the above other bug fixes have been resolved, including; updating the features repo pointer for pax-wicket, removing an unnecessary warning on missing repository name when the name is defined however not presently loaded, the SSHD authorized key provider now logs in DEBUG, and SSH now correctly uses the karaf.base variable. A version update to pax web 1.0.9 has also been included in the dependencies.

As discussed in my prior Apache Karaf 2.2.7 preparation post, I enjoyed listening to Bryan Adams albums throughout the release process and was delighted to try the Santa Rite Reserva Carmenere 2009 -- this time I had to sample the wine a little late as I was on the road for the release process ;)

My hopes is that the next 2.2.x release will occur on its regular schedule, however we are always ready to quickly turn out a patch for a critical regression should one be identified.
